The Language of Color…

Just as lines within a composition has meaning….So does colors/hues…here are examples of expressive qualities of  color/light that represents meaning:

Valve – The degree of light and dark

Color is described by it valve and its intensity

Intensity – a function of color’s brightness (vivid colors/high intensity) or dullness (low intensity

Monochromatic color – only one color

Poly-chromatic color – a variety of colors

Complementary colors – colors that lie opposite each other on the color wheel

Intermediate colors – mixture of a primary color and a secondary color

Symbolic colors – colors that has a meaning

Primary colors – foundation for all other colors (red, blue, and yellow)

Secondary colors – colors that are created from the primary colors (orange, green, and purple)

Local colors – colors commonly associated with an object

Arbitrary colors – colors that are not naturalistic

Warm colors

Cool colors

Tints – mixture of white with a color

Shades – darken colors
