Hum: 102 Symphony of Poetry

Per our lecture we discussed:

Poetry is a formal organization of words that express feelings – emotions – ideas to tell a story and/or convey feelings and/or experiences.  The organization/structure of the words that expresses these experiences and feelings are created with style and rhythm.

We discussed two styles of poetry: narrative and lyrical.

The style of lyrical poetry is a type of poetry that expresses a personal emotional experience. Lyrical poetry uses broken stanzas (a grouping of 4 to 6 lines that are used to shift thought, mood, or time) to tell the personal experience.

The style of narrative poetry is a type of poetry that tells a short story.  Narrative poetry uses verse paragraphs to shift within the story, within the thought, idea mood, or time or the story.

Assignment: Your will type two (2) different poems and present them.

The first poem will consist of choosing the work of a professional poet.  You do not have to limit yourself to the United States in choosing a poet. Review the style of work from different professional poets from the past and the present.  Choose one that you want to present. Your presentation includes:

A brief bio on the poet.  Read the poem. Discuss why you chose that poem.

The second poem consists of an original narrative or lyrical poem created by you.  You may use the mask or another inspirational object.  Place the image of your inspirational object on a flash-drive so it can be used as a setting.
